Today, we dive into the impact of escalating tariffs on the collectibles market. As the U.S. government announced a series of new duties on imports, Professional Sports Authenticator, or PSA, has taken the significant step of pausing all direct grading submissions from key markets—including Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Mexico.
In an official statement, PSA confirmed that collectors in these regions can no longer submit items through their online portal. This pause means that if items are sent from these countries to the U.S., the sender will bear the financial responsibilities of any tariffs, duties, or taxes incurred.
To put this into perspective, the U.S. has implemented additional tariffs of 10% on imports from China and a staggering 25% on most goods from Canada and Mexico. Meanwhile, China has responded with tariffs ranging from 10-15% on various U.S. imports, impacting cross-border commerce.
This isn’t just a bureaucratic issue; it has real implications for collectors and businesses alike on platforms like eBay, which is a major hub for trading cards and memorabilia. In fact, PSA manages eBay’s authenticity guarantee program for high-value cards, and the ramifications of these tariffs could ripple through the entire marketplace.
However, not all companies are halting their operations. Beckett has announced that they will continue to accept submissions from Canada and Mexico, unperturbed by these new tariffs. As they monitor the situation for changes, they assure collectors that service remains unchanged across their European grading center.
PSA is also being proactive, offering alternative solutions for Canadian customers who can still submit by mailing items to their hub in Halifax or through authorized dealers. Their sights are set on international expansion in 2025, with plans to open new facilities in Toronto, Germany, and Tokyo.
The collectibles community, a vibrant tapestry of international enthusiasts, is now facing uncertainty in the wake of these new trade policies. We’ll keep a watchful eye on these developments, as they will undoubtedly shape the landscape of this unique market.
